This dark psychological fantasy is more than a moral tale. It is also a product of its time, drawing on contemporary theories of class, evolution and criminality, and the secret lives behind Victorian propriety, to create a unique form of urban Gothic.

Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island (1881) is set in the days of sailing ships, pirates, and treasure maps marked with an X. It recounts the adventures of Jim Hawkins and his search for the buried treasure of Captain Flint, an evil pirate. Treasure Island is one of the most frequently dramatised of all narratives.

The classic story, told in the first person by Jim Hawkins, whose mother kept the Admiral Benbow Inn, and who shared in the adventures from start to finish. An old sea dog comes to this peaceful inn one day, apparently intending to finish his life there. He hires Jim to keep a watch out for other sailors, but despite all precautions, he is hunted out and served with the black spot that means death. Jim and his mother barely escape death when Blind Pew, Black Dog, and other pirates descend on the inn in search of the sea dog’s papers. Jim snatches up a packet of papers to square the sailor’s debt, when they were forced to retreat from the inn.

The new Jim Carrey movie, Me, Myself, and Irene, hits theaters this weekend! We recommend listening to the original tale of a man with an evil twin, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, as a warm-up for this summer blockbuster.

The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde was an immediate success and is one of Stevenson's best-selling works. Within a year of its publication, stage adaptations began in Boston and London, and soon moved all across England and then towards his home in Scotland. The novella has gone on to inspire scores of major film and stage performances. The work centers around Dr. Jekyll, one man with two personalities, one apparently good and the other evil.

Suppose you could travel the streets in a perfect disguise and commit any crime, indulge any vice, do whatever you wanted, to anyone you wanted, unburdened by guilt or remorse, and no one would ever know it was you. What would you do? Would you ever stop? Would you still be yourself? Or can a creature without compassion, without self-restraint, without morals, still be called human at all?

Millions of people have thrilled to the adventure of young Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver since the publication of Treasure Island in 1883. It has been dramatized countless times since its appearance. Treasure maps marked with an X, schooners, the Black Spot, tropical islands, and peglegged sailors with parrots on their shoulders: All these stereotypes of the buccaneer tale were the invention of R. L. Stevenson. But make no mistake about it...this novel is a masterpiece of plot development, character study, and sheer writing skill.

Stark and skillfully woven, this fascinating novel is a brilliantly original study of man’s dual nature as well as an immortal tale of suspense and terror. Dr. Jekyll, a generous and philanthropic physician, is preoccupied with the problem of good and evil, and how to separate them. He...
