Er war ein armer Mann, doch mutig und aktiv, fähig zu lesen und zu schreiben. Von Zeit zu Zeit heuerte er auf den Schiffen an und sah so die weite Welt. Eines Tages kommt Kaewe in den Besitz einer magischen Flasche, die seinem Besitzer jedweden Wunsch sofort erfüllt. Zunächst ungläubig stellt Kaewe fest, dass diese Behauptung der Wahrheit entspricht. Leider hat der Zauber auch seinen Nachteil: Besitzt man die Flasche, wenn man stirbt, so gibt es keine Rettung.

Fast auf Reichweite folgte der Schwarze hinter ihm. Rorie und ich blieben stehen, denn hier vermochten Menschen nichts mehr. Das war Gottes Ratschluss, der sich hier vor unseren Augen vollzog. Schneller konnte das Ende nicht kommen. An dieser steilen Küste waren sie mit einem Sprung in der Tiefe.

First published in 1886, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde is perhaps the most famous example of the gothic horror novella. Gabriel John Utterson, a sombre London lawyer, becomes concerned for the safety and sanity of his friend and client Dr. Henry Jekyll, after the doctor begins associating with an unseemly young man named Edward Hyde. Following a spate of crimes, including blackmail and murder, and with all fingers pointing at Hyde, the lawyer sets out to free his friend from the dreadful influence of his new acquaintance. Not everything, however, is as it seems.

The Toll House, standing alone by the wayside under nodding pines, with its streamlet and water-tank; its backwoods, toll-bar, and well trodden croquet ground; the ostler standing by the stable door, chewing a straw; a glimpse of the Chinese cook in the back parts; and Mr. Hoddy in the bar, gravely alert and serviceable, and equally anxious to lend or borrow books; dozed all day in the dusty sunshine, more than half asleep. There were no neighbours, except the Hansons up the hill.

A change in the colour of the light usually called me in the morning. By a certain hour, the long, vertical chinks in our western gable, where the boards had shrunk and separated, flashed suddenly into my eyes as stripes of dazzling blue, at once so dark and splendid that I used to marvel how the qualities could be combined. At an earlier hour, the heavens in that quarter were still quietly coloured, but the shoulder of the mountain which shuts in the canyon already glowed with sunlight in a wonderful compound of gold and rose and green; and this too would kindle, although more mildly and with rainbow tints, the fissures of our crazy gable.

There is quite a large race or class of people in America, for whom we scarcely seem to have a parallel in England. Of pure white blood, they are unknown or unrecognizable in towns; inhabit the fringe of settlements and the deep, quiet places of the country; rebellious to all labour, and pettily thievish, like the English gipsies; rustically ignorant, but with a touch of wood-lore and the dexterity of the savage. Whence they came is a moot point.

In our rule at Silverado, there was a melancholy interregnum. The queen and the crown prince with one accord fell sick; and, as I was sick to begin with, our lone position on Mount Saint Helena was no longer tenable, and we had to hurry back to Calistoga and a cottage on the green. By that time we had begun to realize the difficulties of our position. We had found what an amount of labour it cost to support life in our red canyon; and it was the dearest desire of our hearts to get a China-boy to go along with us when we returned.

Die gottesfürchtige Puritanergesellschaft eines kleines Dorfes staunt nicht schlecht als sich ihr neuer Pastor als ein Mann erweist, dem die 1000-2000 Buchseiten konzentrierter Wahrheit, die Bibel, anscheinend nicht genügen. Nicht nur, dass er sich anmaßt andere Bücher zu lesen, er stellt sogar eine lupenreine Sünderin, Janet, als Hausangestellte ein.

First published in 1886, Robert Louis Stevenson's rollicking historical novel Kidnapped was an instant bestseller. It was followed by an 1893 sequel, Catriona, which Stevenson regarded as his 'high water mark', declaring that he would 'never do a better book'. Included here is the epic 10-part BBC radio dramatisation of both action-packed tales.
