In the chilling dawn of a near-future world, gene hackers, armed with AI and CRISPR's deadly precision, unleash wave after wave of engineered diseases. With food dwindling and trust eroding, nations spiral into authoritarian chaos, battling an unseen enemy while rampant disinformation corrodes the very fabric of society.

The war against the sentient artificial intelligence has been simmering and erupting for two years. In their attempt to isolate the hardware hosting the AI's software, the armies of the world have embarked on a coordinated campaign to destroy silicon-based processor equipment across the planet. Unfortunately, it's not just TVs, laptops, and cellphones that have fallen in their crosshairs, but service robots and even the computer modules driving the prosthetic limbs used by some of the disabled. Trapped in Dallas at the center of an assault, Madison has enlisted the help of a robot.

Fourteen years have passed since the virus ripped through the global population, crushing the modern world and leaving the cities crawling with the infected. The immune who survived the violence of the collapse fled to remote havens like Balmorhea, a tiny town in the desert of Far West Texas.

It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

The virus came, and the world fell into an abyss. Starvation camps, corporate farms, endless ghettos, and failed states darken a future where most of the population has been twisted by the disease. To protect itself, a corrupt system pays Christian Black and others like him to exterminate violent degenerates who would destroy what's left of the world. Unfortunately, a mistake has been made and Christian has put too many of the wrong ones to death. Laws have been broken. Punishment comes for Christian.
