A deliciously airily irresponsible comedy. Such is the The Importance of Being Earnest, the most personally characteristic expression of Wilde's art, and the last of the dramatic productions written under his own name. The dialogue has all the sparkle of bubbles from a gushing spring, and is brim-full of quaint conceits and diverting paradoxes.

The Importance of Being Earnest is a very popular play written by Oscar Wilde. In the satire, Algernon and Jack are two young members of the English gentry who pursue their romantic desires dishonestly. Both men want to adopt the name "Ernest," who is Jack's imaginary younger brother. The idea of name changing comes about when Algernon wants to marry Cecily, and Jack wants to marry Gwendolen. However, it just so happens that Cecily and Gwendolen are only interested in marrying men named Ernest!

Lord Arthur Saviles's Crime is a masterpiece of polished cynicism, in which poison, explosive clocks and finally murder forerun married bliss. Each of the eight stories here were published in the heyday of Wilde's career, between 1887 and 1891.

In The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde weaves a gothic tale of vanity, moral corruption, and the pursuit of eternal youth. Dorian Gray, a young man of extraordinary beauty, makes a dark pact that allows him to remain forever young while a hidden portrait ages and bears the weight of his sins. As Dorian’s outward appearance remains perfect, the portrait becomes a grotesque reflection of his inner decay.

At its heart, De Profundis is a love letter and is better known as the De Profundis papers. Written in 1897, while Oscar Wilde was imprisoned in Reading Gaol, De Profundis would become one of his best-known works. The papers include Wilde's account of living a lavish lifestyle and his relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas, both of which he credited for his eventual downfall and imprisonment. The second half of the papers is Wilde's account of prison life and his spiritual awakening.

Oscar Wilde's first play confronts the hypocrisy of public "morality" compared with genuine, private kindness. The reasons for its continued popularity are not difficult to identify: the play's witty dialogue contains many of Wilde's most quoted aphorisms, its stylish setting provides opportunities for elegant presentation, and its cast of memorable characters play out a story which is genuinely moving. This new audio production brings together a full cast worthy of Wilde's creative genius.
