The Metamorphoses by Publius Ovidius Naso (43 B.C. - A.D. 17) has, over the centuries, been the most popular and influential work from our classical tradition. This extraordinary collection of some 250 Greek and Roman myths and folk tales has always been a popular favorite, and has decisively shaped western art and literature from the moment it was completed in A.D. 8. The stories are particularly vivid when read by David Horovitch, in this new lively verse translation by Ian Johnston.

Slightly hobbled by a twisted ankle, crime-solving restaurateur Aunty Lee begrudgingly agrees to take a rest from running her famous cafe, Aunty Lee's Delights, and turns over operations to her friend and new business partner Cherril. The cafe serves as a meeting place for an animal rescue society that Cherril once supported. They were forced to dissolve three years earlier after a British expat killed the puppy she'd adopted, sparking a firestorm of scandal.

1936 in the Crown Colony of Singapore, and the British abdication crisis and rising Japanese threat seem very far away. When the Irish nanny looking after acting governor Palin's daughter dies suddenly - and in mysterious circumstances - mission school-educated local girl Su Lin - an aspiring journalist trying to escape an arranged marriage - is invited to take her place. But then another murder at the residence occurs and it seems very likely that a killer is stalking the corridors of Government House.

Singapore is agog with the news of King Edward VIII's abdication to marry American heiress Wallis Simpson. Chen Su Lin, now Chief Inspector Le Froy's secretarial assistant in Singapore's newly formed detective unit, still dreams of becoming a journalist and hopes to cover the story when the Hon Victor Glossop announces he is marrying an American widow of his own, Mrs Nicole Covington, in the colony. But things go horribly wrong when Victor Glossop is found dead, his body covered in bizarre symbols and soaked in betel nut juice.

In this series we listen to short stories that are NOT by perhaps the most well-known author of this type. But the many other rich talents in the volume may have treated the subject matter a little differently, or were perhaps just overlooked in the stampede to applaud the winner, but these authors are of equal merit.

Love. Perhaps the one word solution for everything. An emotion, a state of mind that we strive for, search for. A wondrous force that binds, inspires, and a force that can spin out of control; unbalanced and fragile. Love reflects, changes and embraces us all. In this series we explore the many facets of love through literary talents that span both time and country.

Students sometimes ask questions whose depth is such that teachers have trouble coming up with answers. That is what happened to me on January 31, 1984, as I was teaching my Introduction to Economics course at Maisonneuve College in Montreal, Canada. Suddenly, a student raised her hand and asked me with great sincerity: “Sir, what makes the world go round, love or money?” Taken aback by the simplicity and depth of her question, I remained silent for a few seconds, made a few comments, and, remembering the lessons I had learned, asked them what they thought the answer was.

Since the beginning of his papacy in 2013, Pope Francis has been praised and admired for his surprisingly progressive views on social justice and the climate crisis. And he has also been vocal about the clericalism that exists in the Catholic Church and taken many steps to show that he, as pope, wants to move away from such clericalism: he chose to live in the modest Santa Marta residence instead of the traditional papal apartments; he chose to be driven around in a used car instead of the traditional papal limousine.

I was plunged into such a deep shock and sadness, that I was forced to ask myself what had gone wrong. Why would my lifelong friend Tom, raised on the farm by a wonderful mom and dad exactly like I had been, end up doing such a horrible thing as abusing minors? Why in the world would such a thing ever happen in such an extraordinary, loving and close-knit family as that of Tom! Why?

Humphries has rendered (Ovid's) love poetry with conspicuous success into English which is neither obtrusively colloquial nor awkwardly antique.

The diary and letters I wrote when I experienced the coup d'état that ousted Salvador Allende in Chile on Tuesday morning, 11 September 1973. This coup was carefully planned by the Chilean elite with the help of the CIA, and included propaganda, economic sabotage, torture, total press censorship, assassination, and a radical free market revolution leading to a gross gap between rich and poor.
