The Graveyard Poets, also known as 'Churchyard Poets' or 'the Boneyard Boys' began in pre-Romantic days with a leaning towards gloom, melancholy and the general decay of churchyards. It should be remembered that in the 18th century city graveyards were a teeming mass of overcrowding and disease, their country brethren better but hardly idylls of worship. What would eventually lead to the Gothic literary genre began, in the main, with reflections by Christian clergymen upon God, mortality and the assumed afterlife.

In January 1866 Hopkins composed his most ascetic poem, The Habit of Perfection, but a few days later he included poetry in the list of things to be given up for Lent. In July he decided to become a Catholic, and by May 1868 Hopkins firmly 'resolved to be religious'. Less than a week later, he made a bonfire of his poems and ceased to write for almost seven years.

Benjamin 'Ben' Jonson was born in June 1572. A contemporary of William Shakespeare, he is best known for his satirical plays Volpone, The Alchemist, and Bartholomew Fair and his equally accomplished lyric poems. A man of vast reading and a seemingly insatiable appetite for controversy, including time in jail and a penchant for switching faiths, Jonson had an unparalleled breadth of influence on Jacobean and Caroline playwrights and poets.

In 1667, Dryden published Annus Mirabilis, a lengthy historical poem which described the English defeat of the Dutch naval fleet and the Great Fire of London. This work established him as the pre-eminent poet of his generation, and was crucial in his attaining the posts of Poet Laureate in 1668 and a couple of years later, historiographer royal (1670), as his talent encompassed many forms; from poetry to plays to translations. In 1694 he began work on what would be his most ambitious and defining work as translator, The Works of Virgil (1697).

John Donne was born on 22nd January 1572 in London into a Roman Catholic family when Catholicism was illegal in England and there was turbulence and unrest with both state and church throughout much of Europe. His father, also named John, died when he was four, and his mother, Elizabeth Heywood, married a wealthy widower, ensuring the family were looked after. He received a good education in both Oxford and Cambridge but was unable to obtain a degree without taking the Oath of Supremacy, which as a Catholic he refused to do.

Alexander Pope was born on May 21st, 1688 into a Catholic family in London. Over the years and centuries since his death, Pope’s work has been in and out of favour, but with this distance he is now truly recognised as one of England’s greatest poets. Over the far horizon the blanket of night begins to slowly dissolve. The sun is once more on its daily journey across the heavens. Romanticism was a new movement in philosophy and the arts that began in the late 18th century when major political events shook the world, such as the French Revolution and American independence. It subsequently altered the way in which we perceive poetry and beyond as well as defining our own modern sensibilities to the arts.

Book 10 starts with Gerumph having a very frustrating dream about trying to find a way into a lovely grove full of bananas. Before he can solve the puzzle, Honeybear wakes him up so they can set out on the long journey in search of her mother.

In book 11, Honeybear and Gerumph travel across Raven’s Marsh. It is a confusing place where everywhere looks the same as everywhere else. Hopelessly lost, they meet a familiar character who offers to show them the way.

In book 9, Tiffin the monkey finds himself tricked out of the food he’s been gathering in the forest. When he sees an otter being tricked in the same way, he wants to stop the thieves but knows this might put him in grave danger.

In the final story of the series, Honeybear and Gerumph arrive at the Red Circle Ranch. Right from the start things go badly. And when the friends are separated, and Honeybear finds out one of the captive animals is a bear, she knows she must risk everything to find Gerumph–and speak to the bear.

In the seventh story of the series, Honeybear and Gerumph make a long trip to the sea for the first time. On their way they call in on Tweezer, a bear who tells them their journey will take them through an area of the forest legend says is haunted by a creature called a Yeppi!

In the sixth story, two men come to camp in the forest. They soon scatter rubbish all around and amuse themselves by being cruel to the animals, calling it their “bit of fun”.

In the second book of the series, Honeybear and Gerumph the gorilla decide to build a bigger tree house for the two of them to share. While they are planning their new home, Gerumph is surprised to discover that Honeybear doesn’t know when her birthday is, so he decides to hold a party for her.

As the fifth story opens, snow blankets the forest, and food is hard to find. Looking for something to eat, Honeybear and Gerumph come across bear tracks in the snow.

In book 12, Honeybear and Gerumph travel toward the Red Circle Ranch. On their way, they encounter a very strange, dangerous creature, but also their old friend Douglas the owl. Together, they must survive a bewildering experience when the sun goes out, plunging them into total darkness in the middle of the day.

Book eight finds our friends helping Honeybear’s aunt Mara build her new home in the forest. But there is a troublesome monkey about who first tries to trick, then steal from them.
