E.M. Bounds (1835-1913) was an American pastor. He authored 11 books, mostly on prayer. The Essentials of Prayer is considered one of his greatest works.

Alfred Edersheim (1825-1889), a Jewish convert to Christianity, was a Biblical scholar and author. Alfred Edersheim’s book is a guide to the Holy Temple that attempts to relay the essence of the temple’s significance in the life of Israel and in the theology of the early Christians. The author shares his detailed knowledge of the building and its environment, the utensils used, and the tasks of the priests on the major holidays like Passover, Day of Atonement, and the Feast of Tabernacles.

Frederick Brotherton Meyer (1847-1929) was a Baptist pastor and evangelist in England involved in ministry and inner city mission work on both sides of the Atlantic. He was a friend of D. L. Moody and A. C. Dixon, and the author of numerous religious books and articles. Referring constantly to scripture in "The Secret of Guidance", Meyer calls on believers to examine their inner motives, to consider how they ought to be receptive to God’s guidance. The book emphasizes spiritual formation and the practical application of Christian precepts in daily life.

The author of The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit, R. A. Torrey (1856-1928), was an evangelist and Bible scholar. Considered a Christian classic, this work is a methodical explanation of who the Holy Spirit is and how the Holy Spirit works in the world. Torrey discusses the gifts of the Spirit, the difference between baptism with the Spirit and the filling of the Spirit, and speaking in tongues. Much of the work involves key themes like the promise of the Spirit, and the importance of seeking the Spirit according to scripture.

In this sermon, Alexander conveys some rules to live by for young Christians. He urges young - and really all - Christians to form good habits, be particular about the company they keep, and take in knowledge wherever they can.

In Christian churches, there are always men and women who wish to do good, but they don't know what to do. Archibald Alexander has an idea; go into the downtrodden areas of the cities and convince someone to come with you to church. This, he feels, is the responsibility of all Christians wishing to do good in the world.

Archibald Alexander decrees that God is the only being who justifies. He stresses that justification is an instrument of Christ, and thus is by faith alone.

Alexander writes this prose to speak directly to the poor man, to tell them not to envy their rich neighbors as their wealth only brings evil. He continues, that the matter of your soul should come first and foremost and not worldly goods. He feels, truly, that nothing in life is exempt from troubles - rich or poor.

In this sermon, Archibald Alexander deals with prayer. He states that, as far as reason can lead us, we seem to be shut out from all fellowship with our Maker, and whether prayer is permitted would remain forever doubtful, were it not for divine revelation. And that God may be acceptably approached by sinners only through the mediation of his Son.

As a pastor and student of the Bible, Archibald Alexander came to appreciate the different ways that people experience the new birth and its effects. In his book on religious experience, he observed that there is unity and diversity to the conversion experience, and that there is no more important event which occurs in our world than the new birth of an immortal soul.

"When there is no growth, there is no life". Archibald Alexander discusses the things that we have taken for granted. He urges that all Christians face challenges and one must overcome them to grow as a religious person.

In this sermon, Archibald Alexander deals with fasting, based on inter alia Isaiah 58:3-5 and Joel 2:12-13. He argues that external fasting, without corresponding internal penitence and humiliation, is hypocrisy and that fasting must be accompanied by true humility.

Alexander talks about the truth of the gospel in this passage - about how it is both seen internally and externally. He stresses that the internal proof is in the heart, rooted in the truth itself. He uses an analogies for the belief in God; that even though you may not see him, you feel him.
