Robert Louis Stevenson’s An Inland Voyage is his first published book (1878). It is a travelogue, a pioneering work of touristic adventure, which records his canoeing holiday in the summer of 1876, with a friend (Sir Walter Grindlay Simpson), through the waterways of Belgium and France. RLS, then 26 years old, is The Arethusa, named after his vessel, and his friend, The Cigar. It is, for the most part, a gentle journey, written in the Romantic style, full of humour, philosophical reflection, bygone charm and very frequent rain.

Robert Louis Stevenson's lengthy short story 'The Pavilion on the Links' was considered by Arthur Conan Doyle to be 'the first short story in the world'. Skillfully narrated by storyteller Darla Middlebrook, this Robert Louis Stevenson tale of Keawe, a poor Hawaiian man, who buys a strange bottle from a sad, elderly gentleman who credits the bottle with his fortune. The elderly gentleman promises that an imp residing in the bottle will also grant Keawe his every desire. Of course, there is a catch - the bottle must be sold at a loss, i.e. for less than its owner originally paid, or else it will simply return to him. The currency used in the transaction must also be in coin (not paper money or a bank check).

Eher zufällig kommt der angesehene Anwalt Utterson diesem Mr. Hyde auf die Schliche und ist umso überraschter, als er herausfindet, dass dieser Mann sogar einen sehr engen Kontakt zu seinem besten Freund Dr. Jekyll unterhält.

In dieser im Jahr 1881 verfassten Kurzgeschichte, berichtet Robert Louis Stevenson über eine alte Frau, namens Janet. In einem Dorf in Schottland schleppen einige Weiber Janet ans Ufer des Flusses Dule, um zu sehen, ob sie ertrinkt. Der Pastor rettet sie und so wird Janet seine Haushälterin. Nach einem Schlaganfall hält sie ihren Kopf schief. Eines Tages sieht der Pfarrer einen schwarzen Mann, im dem er den Teufel sieht, im Pfarrhaus verschwinden. Kurz danach findet er Janet erhängt in Ihrem Zimmer. Schließlich steht ihr Leichnam vor ihm.
