Two student anatomists purchase the remains of humanity in the small hours of the morning. The shadowy men who bring the bodies seldom speak, and the suspicions of the students are never spoken aloud. Until one morning when the drapery is lifted from the face of a new acquisition, and one student recognizes it as the face of a dear friend, alive and well only yesterday.

You are walking through the streets of London. It is getting dark and you want to get home quickly. You enter a narrow side-street. Everything is quiet, but as you pass the door of a large, windowless building, you hear a key turning in the lock. A man comes out and looks at you. You have never seen him before, but you realize immediately that he hates you. You are shocked to discover, also, that you hate him. Who is this man that everybody hates?

Robert Louis Stevenson's lengthy short story 'The Pavilion on the Links' was considered by Arthur Conan Doyle to be 'the first short story in the world'. This unsettlingly nerve-racking tale is every bit as chilling as its much wider known follower, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and at the time of its publication was every bit as successful. Stevenson makes the choice in the story of having two fairly unpleasant characters for his main protagonists.

Skillfully narrated by storyteller Darla Middlebrook, this Robert Louis Stevenson tale of Keawe, a poor Hawaiian man, who buys a strange bottle from a sad, elderly gentleman who credits the bottle with his fortune. The elderly gentleman promises that an imp residing in the bottle will also grant Keawe his every desire. Of course, there is a catch - the bottle must be sold at a loss, i.e. for less than its owner originally paid, or else it will simply return to him. The currency used in the transaction must also be in coin (not paper money or a bank check).

In einem Dorf in Schottland schleppen einige Weiber Janet ans Ufer des Flusses Dule, um zu sehen, ob sie ertrinkt. Der Pastor rettet sie und so wird Janet seine Haushälterin. Nach einem Schlaganfall hält sie ihren Kopf schief. Eines Tages sieht der Pfarrer einen schwarzen Mann, im dem er den Teufel sieht, im Pfarrhaus verschwinden. Kurz danach findet er Janet erhängt in Ihrem Zimmer. Schließlich steht ihr Leichnam vor ihm.

Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes (1879), a pioneering classic of outdoor literature, is one of Robert Louis Stevenson's earliest published works. It gives an account of his 12 day, 200 kilometer hiking journey through the sparsely populated areas of the Cévennes mountains in south-central France. The Cévennes was the site of a Protestant rebellion around 1702, which was severely suppressed by Louis XIV. Stevenson was well-versed in the history and evokes scenes from the rebellion as he passes through the area of the rebellion during the final days of his trek.
