Eines Nachmittags saß ich vor dem Cafe de la Paix und betrachtete den Glanz und die Schäbigkeit des Pariser Lebens und bewunderte hinter meinem Glas Wermut das merkwürdige Panorama von Stolz und Armut, das sich vor mir entwickelte. Da hörte ich, wie jemand meinen Namen rief. Ich wandte mich um und sah Lord Murchison. Wir waren einander nicht begegnet, seitdem wir vor beinah zehn Jahren zusammen studierten, und so war ich denn entzückt, ihn wiederzusehen, und wir schüttelten uns herzlich die Hände. In Oxford waren wir gute Freunde gewesen.

Oscar Wilde wurde am 16.10.1854 in Dublin geboren. Sein Vater war Arzt, seine Mutter Dichterin. Wilde studierte in Dublin und Oxford. Seit 1879 lebte er in London. 1895 wurde er vom Vater seines Freundes Lord Douglas wegen homosexueller Neigungen angezeigt und zu zwei Jahren Zuchthaus verurteilt. Wilde starb am 30.11.1900 verarmt in Paris.

Bis sich Tochter Virginia des traurigen Gespensts erbarmt.

Die Londoner Zeitung "The Daily Chronicle" hatte berichtet, ein Gefängnisaufseher sei entlassen worden, weil er einem hungrigen Kinde, das im Gefängnis eingesperrt war, ein paar Cakes zu essen gegeben habe. Darauf richtete O. W. folgenden Brief an den Herausgeber des Blattes.

"The Birthday of the Infanta" is about a hunchbacked dwarf, found in the woods by courtiers of the King of Spain. The hunchback's father sells him to the palace for the amusement of the king's daughter, the Infanta, on her twelfth birthday. Her birthday is the only time she is allowed to mingle with other children, and she much enjoys the many festivities arranged to mark it, especially the Dwarf's performance. He dances, as he did in the woods, thoroughly unaware of his audience's laughing at him.

The Canterville Ghost is a novella by Oscar Wilde. It was the first of Wilde's stories to be published, appearing in two parts in The Court and Society Review, 23 February and 2 March 1887. The story is about an American family who move to a castle haunted by the ghost of a dead nobleman, who killed his wife and was starved to death by his wife's brothers. It has been adapted for the stage and screen several times.

In "The Fisherman and his Soul", a young Fisherman finds a Mermaid and wants nothing more than to marry her, but he cannot, for one cannot live underwater if one has a soul. He goes to his priest, but the priest tells him his soul is his most precious possession, and the soulless mermen are lost. He tries to sell it to merchants, who tell him it is not worth anything. He goes to a witch, who tells him his soul is his shadow, and says how it can be cut away with a viper-skin knife after he dances with her.
