First published in 1892, The Yellow Wallpaper is a classic short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. It's an early work of feminist literature focused on a female protagonist and her relationship with husband John. A great work for studying and casual listening. This story is told as a series of journal entries from a woman who is on forced rest as a treatment for hysteria following the birth of her child. As was common in the time, she is forbidden from any work or "strenuous" tasks and is left to sit alone most of her days without mental stimulation, trapped in a room and a marriage that are not fulfilling her. The woman's isolation and mental state cause her to believe that there is a woman stuck in the wallpaper of her room.

As haunting as it is poignant, The Yellow Wallpaper is a deeply compelling short story that follows a woman's descent into madness. Having been confined to a nursery by her physician and husband after a nervous depression, the protagonist is denied access to writing or working, and soon begins to feel stifled by the four walls which she inhabits. Over time, she begins to develop an obsessive fascination with the room's yellow wallpaper, perceiving the figure of a trapped woman behind the paper's patterns.

It is very seldom that mere ordinary people like John and myself secure ancestral halls for the summer. A colonial mansion, a hereditary estate, I would say a haunted house, and reach the height of romantic felicity—but that would be asking too much of fate! Still I will proudly declare that there is something queer about it. Else, why should it be let so cheaply? And why have stood so long untenanted? John laughs at me, of course, but one expects that in marriage. John is practical in the extreme.

Through the unsettling diary of a woman confined to a room with disturbing yellow wallpaper, Gilman crafts a chilling descent into obsession that remains one of the most powerful feminist works in American literature.

Written at a time when women were expected to remain silent and self-sacrificing, this short work pulses with quiet rebellion and razor-edged wit.

In this volume we examine Gothic short stories from the woman’s point of view. More usually in this genre the main examples are almost always given as male. Well, in this volume we prove that view needs severely testing. Here we explore works by classic women authors who, with the sheer breadth of their talents and narratives, can make mere men seem tame by comparison.

Step into the peeling corners of a sunlit nursery where shadows weave stories, and the wallpaper whispers secrets to the solitary occupant. The Yellow Wallpaper is a haunting exploration of the fine line between reality and madness, told through the intimate, unraveling voice of a woman confined by both a stifling room and the suffocating norms of her time. In this groundbreaking work, Gilman transforms the mundane into the menacing, using the seemingly innocent patterns of wallpaper to reveal a tapestry of despair, resilience, and suppressed creativity.
