Gene Edwards challenges one of the most entrenched traditions in modern Christianity: the role of the professional pastor. Drawing from both Scripture and church history, Edwards argues that the contemporary pastoral office is not only unscriptural but also spiritually debilitating, for pastors and congregations alike. Through personal anecdotes, historical insight, and biblical analysis, he reveals how the institutional pastorate emerged not from the early church but from post-apostolic traditions, particularly Roman Catholic practices.

Gene Edwards offers a provocative examination of the early church, highlighting a time when leadership was entirely in the hands of ordinary believers—non-professionals without titles, theological degrees, or ecclesiastical authority. Drawing from both Scripture and historical context, Edwards illustrates how the explosive growth and spiritual vitality of the first-century church thrived under lay leadership. He argues that the church’s earliest years were marked by simplicity, spontaneity, and a deep dependency on Christ as the true head of the body.

You have read the book of Acts before, but you have never heard the men who lived it tell the story themselves. For the first eleven chapters PETER tells the story of Acts. Then beginning in chapter thirteen Barnabas tells his part of the story . . . then Silas. Then TIMOTHY, etc. It is as though each man left a diary for you to read. You now have a record of the eye witness account of the first-century events. Acts in First Person is the perfect companion to The Story of My Life . . . as Told by Jesus Christ. The five historical books of the New Testament are all now in first person.

Sharing Christ with others was a natural part of life for Gene Edwards. He was comfortable introducing a person to Christ and then guiding him or her through committing their life to Him and receiving Him into their inmost being. Gene wrote this little book not long before his death in December of 2022. SeedSowers now brings it to you.

The reason for this book: to bring to us a totally new beginning for the body of Christ. Gene Edwards challenges the long-held evangelical ideal of restoring a so-called "New Testament church" by reconstructing its biblical elements. Edwards argues that the early churches described in the New Testament were not institutional models to replicate but organic, living expressions of Christ—unique, Spirit-led communities that emerged naturally within their cultural contexts.
