Noted academics and political commentators Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky each spoke for about 20 minutes and answered questions for over an hour. At the beginning, Zinn jokingly said that he would speak about hope and let Chomsky deal with desperation. Both Zinn and Chomsky spoke about how political and social matters had improved for the better during the past century and that today's times were not as desperate as in the past.

In this urgent new book, Noam Chomsky examines the dangers and prospects of our early 21st century. Exploring challenges such as the growing gap between North and South, American exceptionalism (including under President Obama), the fiascos of Iraq and Afghanistan, the U.S.-Israeli assault on Gaza, and the recent recent financial bailouts, he also sees hope for the future. Chomsky surveys the democratic wave in Latin America and the growing global solidarity movements.

During this event, Chomsky, along with Bernie Dwyer, a journalist and film maker, and Father Geoffrey Bottoms, a peace and justice activist from England, answers questions from the audience.

Originally, this talk was entitled "The United States in the Middle East: Confronting Syria." It was the second of three lectures sponsored by the Lebanese Club at MIT. Chomsky did not want to limit the talk to this one subject.
