Eigentlich sollte Marlowe nur eine junge Frau im Bahnhof von Los Angeles ausfindig machen: "Es war kein Kunststück. Der 'Super Chief' war pünktlich, wie fast immer, und meine Zielperson stach heraus wie ein Känguru im Smoking." Doch kaum beschattet er die Dame, jagt eins das andere: falscher Name, Erpressung, Verfolger, Gangster.
