It’s been said many times that the living are only alive because of the dead. Because of past wars, past genocides, and past invasions that were used to “clean” the Earth, the world we’d left behind only remained “alive” because of the reoccurring pattern of life and death. We, those of us aboard what has become known as “The Last Ship”, will have nothing to brag about when we arrive at our foreordained “new world” light-years away from the blood-stained chronicles of our birth world.

Randall Sullivan slumped in the passenger seat aboard a speeding train on its continuing trip between the realms of truth and fantasy. He will awaken, like many others, without a ticket, without any knowledge as to how he arrived in the seat across the aisle from an elderly couple dressed in gray attire. But during his time on this train, he’ll come to understand a mystery few have ever known. Many are travelers, those who languish between this world and the next.

Darkness choked him. It choked him every night. There was nowhere left for him to run. Solitude, loneliness, and fear loomed in the air as thick as morning fog. Where could he go to hide? He jumped into bed, clutched the covers up around his neck, wedged the blanket under his feet, and prayed for comfort from the watchers, ghosts, unseen visitors, monsters, and those unwanted and uninvited specters that always come from the other world into the room where he slept. They invaded his will, his mind, and his soul.

He can't seem to shake the memory. From the top floor of his office building, he stands in the window and looks out over his domain, one of the cities that never sleeps in the north. His mind is drawn to a simple uncluttered encounter, a scene stuck in his mind for over 15 years. Miles away, on the outskirts of a place called the "Shanty Town", Mrs. Craft remembers a person met by accident at the train station's taxi turnabout. She barely said thank you as he held the taxi door for her. But as he held the door, there was an undeniable sensation that he'd see her again.

The community sat at the foothills of the Great Rocky Mountains. It was a small friendly town bordering the Pacific Time Zone. This was John’s home. This had been his home all of his life. He often wondered why the visitor chose him, but after the outcome, he tried to forget the whole affair.

In a quiet corner of a rural Irish-Scottish settlement, a young girl named Bridget McDonald tended to her family's sheep. Her sturdy boots squelched in the damp earth, and she hummed a lilting tune as the animals grazed around her. The sky above was a canvas of shifting grays, hinting at rain but holding its tongue for now. Bridget's red hair was tied back in a loose braid that danced in the breeze, and her freckled cheeks bore the rosy hue of a life spent outdoors. Her eyes, a deep blue, mirrored the sky's indecision.

The lazy sun moved slowly over the mountains as it had done for eons. In a quaint town nestled against the rolling hills, plush with many varieties of Evergreens and inhabited with deer, rabbits, and groundhogs, there was a girl named Bethany. Bethany wasn't like the other girls in her school. Her hair was a wild pattern of colors, each strand seemingly pulled from a box of forgotten crayons once belonging to another dreamer from times now forgotten. Her eyes, a piercing shade of amber, danced with curiosity and mischief.
