Johnny Maxwell nimmt eine Abkürzung über den örtlichen Friedhof, um nach Haus zu kommen. Da trifft er plötzlich auf den Geist von Thomas Bowler, ehemals Ratsherr der Stadt. Kurz darauf bemerkt Johnny, dass er mit den Geistern der Toten kommunizieren kann. Die verstorbenen Bewohner des Friedhofs klagen über den Plan der Stadt, den vernachlässigten Friedhof von Blackbury an ein Immobilien-Konsortium zu verschachern. Der Friedhof soll verschwinden und Bürogebäuden Platz machen. Johnny soll helfen, diese Pläne zu stoppen.

Johnny Maxwell hat eine lebhafte Phantasie, die ihn immer wieder in die merkwürdigsten Abenteuer katapultiert. Im ersten Buch gerät er in ein Computerspiel, dessen Zielfiguren kapitulieren und sich zurückziehen wollen; im zweiten Band wollen Gespenster auf einem Friedhof verhindern, dass ihre Heimstatt an einen Immobilienmakler verschachert wird; und im dritten entdeckt Johnny einen geheimen Weg in die Vergangenheit, wo er ein schreckliches Ereignis verhindern muss.

Johnny, 12 Jahre alt, hat von seinem Freund Wobbler Johnson eine Piratenausgabe des neuen Computerspiels "Nur du kannst die Menschheit retten" erhalten. Nach kurzer Zeit will das ScreeWee-Imperium aus dem Spiel kaputulieren. Johnny ist verwundert. Die Welt des Spiels taucht plötzlich in seinen Träumen auf. Johnny soll den Spielfiguren, die von sämtlichen Kopien des Spiels verschwunden sind, helfen, in ihre wahre Welt zurückzukehren. Dabei unterstützt ihn Kirsty, die sich Sigourney nennt: eine andere Spielerin aus Johnnys Welt.

Als Johnny in der Nähe eines Kinos die bewusstlose Mrs. Tachyon, eine obdachlose alte Dame, findet und ins Krankenhaus bringt, entdeckt er, dass es sich bei dem Einkaufswagen mit ihren Habseligkeiten um eine Zeitmaschine handelt. Mithilfe dieses Trolleys kehrt Johnny in die Zeit des Zweiten Weltkriegs zurück. Ihn begleiten seine Freunde Stephen, auch bekannt als Wobbler, Bigmac, Kirsty und Yo-less. Sie finden sich 1941 in Johnnys Heimatstadt Blackbury wieder, grade als ein deutscher Luftangriff droht. Johnny versucht, die tödliche Bombardierung abzuwenden.
