This collection includes two of Emerson’s essays: History and Intellect. Emerson wrote most of his essays to be presented as lectures first, and later revised them for print. The essay History explores the nature and importance of historical understanding. Emerson holds that history is not simply a jumble of events and facts, but rather a living and dynamic force that can inspire and guide human action. In his essay Intellect, Emerson notes that the intellectual power of humans separates them from all other living beings on earth.

This play is a dramatization of Boccaccio’s story of Gillette of Narbonne. Only the comic parts were of Shakespeare’s invention; he added the characters of the pusillanimous Parolles, the lofty courtier Lafew, the Clown Lavatch, and the long suffering Countess. He gave new depth and vitality to the leading characters, who are mere outlines in Boccaccio’s tale.

Teenage sleuths Frank and Joe, the sons of famous detective Fenton Hardy, are back with another mystery: tracking down a band of elusive smugglers who have set up operations in their seaside hometown of Bayport. When they provide their father with some clues about some occurrences at a vacant house, and the possible identities of the smugglers, he suddenly disappears. The local police are of no help in locating Fenton Hardy...it's up to Frank and Joe to discover what has happened to their father, and at the same time break up the international smuggling ring.

Frank and Joe Hardy, erstwhile teenage detectives, feel somewhat foolish after accepting a counterfeit bill while helping a stranger at the Bayport train station. Over a period of weeks, friends and family members fall prey to exchanges with counterfeiters, sometimes in transactions amounting to hundreds of dollars. Frank and Joe's father, the highly esteemed private detective Fenton Hardy, is working with the Secret Service to track down the counterfeiting ring, but thus far they haven't had much luck.

Frank and Joe, the sons of famous detective Fenton Hardy, want to follow in their father's footsteps. Their first chance to solve a mystery comes when jewels and securities are stolen from the safe of the local Applegate mansion. To make matters worse, the father of one of their good friends has been charged with the crime. The lads help their father identify the thief, but the location of the stolen items remains unknown. Frank and Joe use their budding investigative skills to solve the mystery and clear the innocent man.
