Frederick Jackson Turner was an American historian during the early 20th century. He was based at the University of Wisconsin-Madison until 1910 and then at Harvard University. He was known primarily for his frontier thesis. He trained many Ph. D.s who went on to become well-known historians. He promoted interdisciplinary and quantitative methods, often emphasizing the Midwestern United States.

Robert Benchley (September 15, 1889 - November 21, 1945) is remembered best for his contributions to the magazine The New Yorker; his essays for that publication, whether topical or absurdist, influenced many modern humorists. The campaign of 1859 in Northern Italy was one of the first of the epoch-making, rapidly conducted wars that marked the latter half of the nineteenth century. It was, moreover, as has been pointed out by the author of Imperial Strategy, the “first war in Europe which conveyed some preliminary indication of what railways can accomplish.”

To describe such a movement and its effects. Professor Turner has the advantage to be a descendant of New Yorkers, of New England stock, but native to the west, and living alongside the most complete collection of materials upon the west which has ever been brought together—the Library of the Wisconsin State Historical Society. The aim of the volume is not to show the Rise of the New West as though it were a separate story, but to show how the nation found itself in the midst of questions involving the west.

That a new history of the United States is needed, extending from the discovery down to the present time hardly needs a statement. No such comprehensive work by a competent writer is now in existence. Individual writers have treated only limited chronological fields. Meantime there, is a rapid increase of published sources and of serviceable monographs based on material hitherto unused. On the one side, there is a necessity for an intelligent summarizing of the present knowledge of American history by trained specialists; on the other hand, there is a need for a complete work.

It must be a primary object with every soldier to know exactly how war is carried on: how strategy is influenced, in its conception by politics and in its execution by tactics; how both strategy and tactics are affected by terrain, by the seasons, by railways, telegraphy, and sea power: how armies have been raised and organized, trained and led in battle; how supplied with weapons and other means of defense, with food and clothing, ammunition and shelter; how the sick and wounded are cared for; how the waste of war is repaired.
