Around the World in Eighty Days is a classic adventure novel by the French writer Jules Verne, first published in 1873. In the story, Phileas Fogg of London and his newly employed French valet Passepartout attempt to circumnavigate the world in 80 days on a wager set by his friends at the Reform Club.

Buck is living a happy life in California until he is sold to pay a gambling debt. Taken to the Klondike to become a sled dog, Buck must toughen up and learn the harsher rules of survival in the North. One of the first of these is how to deal with being harnessed in the same team as a dog that wants to kill him. Large, strong and smart, Buck toughens to his new life. But even the toughest dog can be worn down by constant work, and after 3,000 miles of pulling sleds, Buck nears the end of his rope.

Demon recounts the story of how he tormented a man in the Congo. The man was seated on a rock on the edge of a churning river. The river was bordered by water lillies and surrounded by a forest of poisonous flowers. The man trembled in fear but did not run from the world he saw. Demon then cast a spell that turned the world into a violent one. The winds raged. The Earth shook, but the man remained still trembling. The Demon then cast a spell of silence. The Earth ceased to move. The wind stopped as did the water. There was complete silence. The man stood and strained to hear something.

In “The Domain of Arnheim”, Edgar Allen Poe combines an explication of his aesthetic theory and a physical description of a landscape-garden, Arnheim. The builder of Arnheim, Ellison, is described by a narrator as a fabulously wealthy man, interested “instinctively...in the creation of novel forms of Beauty”. He is interested in shaping nature, in molding it into a “purely physical loveliness.”

The narrator is interested in mesmerism, a pseudoscience involving bringing a patient into a hypnagogic state by the influence of magnetism, a process that later developed into hypnotism. He points out that, as far as he knows, no one has ever been mesmerized at the point of death, and he is curious to see what effects mesmerism would have on a dying person. He considers experimenting on his friend Ernest Valdemar, an author whom he had previously mesmerized and who has recently been diagnosed with phthisis (tuberculosis).

The main character in this story is C. Auguste Dupin, a sleuth who solves crimes by deduction. Two women have been brutally murdered and it appears that there was no way in or out of the room where the murders took place.

The anonymous narrator is suffering from a strange hypersensitivity to everything around him. He lives with an old man who has a clouded bluish eye, an abnormality that fascinates and disturbs him. Resolving to kill the man and dispose of his body, he soon realizes in horror, however, his innocent victim may never let him forget what he has done.
