Anthony Trollope was a British writer of the Victorian period. He was very prolific, writing 47 novels, 42 short stories and five travel books. He is primarily known for his “Chronicles of Barsetshire” series of novels, including the books “The Warden” and “Barchester Towers”. It is held that his satiric novel, “The Way We Live Now” is his masterpiece.

Anthony Trollope's series of witty, gently satirical stories of provincial life are set in the fictional town of Barchester and the surrounding county of Barsetshire. With a focus on the lives, loves and tribulations of the local clergy and rural gentry, the canvas is broad and colourful, with a set of iconic characters in whose lives we become intimately involved as they grow up, grow old, and fall in or out of love and friendship across the years.

This is the fourth book in Anthony Trollopes Barsetshire series. In it, he lives and loves. Lucy Robarts and Lord Lufton, Griselda Grantley and Lord Dumbello, Olivia Proudie and Mr. Tickler, and Miss Dunstable and Dr. Thorne are depicted with warmth and humor. Zu Zeiten seiner Veröffentlichung war der Roman "Auge um Auge" sehr kontrovers. Erzählt wird die Geschichte eines jungen Mannes von Adel, der ein bürgerliches Mädchen verführt. Dabei bleibt es jedoch nicht, denn es dauert nicht lange, da wird das Mädchen schwanger. Sobald der junge Mann jedoch von der Situation erfährt, verlässt er das junge Mädchen, welches nun auf sich selbst gestellt ist. Jedoch birgt die Geschichte einige Überraschungen, denn die Geschichte findet nicht das für die Zeit des 19. Jahrhunderts übliche Ende. Eckart Ischebeck erweckt die Charaktere zum Leben und zieht die Hörer in seinen Bann.

Thompson Hall, redolent of plum pudding and mince pie, green of holly, warmed by omnipotent Victorian fireplaces, awaits the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. Brown from the south of France. But they may never make it to Thompson Hall. The story opens in Paris at Le Grand Hotel, where Mr. Brown is down with "a throat condition"—he is unable to travel to England. Only Mrs. Brown is quite determined they will go on. So begins a Christmas tale complicated and simple, pathetic and farcical, embarrassing—even risque, though of course it could be read aloud to an assembled Victorian family.

Mr and Mrs Brown are keen to make it to Thompson Hall for a cosy family Christmas - the first they will be spending in England instead of France for several years. When Mr Brown is taken ill in Paris en route home, it seems their Christmas wishes may not be coming true. ‘Christmas at Thompson Hall’ is a festive short story full of humorous mishaps from the much-loved Victorian author, Anthony Trollope.
