Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) is noted mainly for his novels Treasure Island, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and Kidnapped, and for his verse, including A Child's Garden of Verses. He also wrote many short stories, of which "The Body-Snatcher" is one of his best known. Two others, "Markheim" and "A Lodging for the Night", are also included in this recording.

Kidnapped is one of Stevenson's most enduringly popular novels. At its center is a historical event: the murder of Colin Campbell, the "Red Fox" of Glenure in Scotland. David Balfour, whose father dies leaving him with nothing to live on, goes to live with a cruel and miserly uncle. The uncle attempts to have the boy killed and then has him kidnapped and taken to sea. The ship is wrecked, and the novel follows David and and his friend Alan as they journey across the Highlands through numerous dangers including witnessing and becoming suspects in the murder of the Red Fox.

Since its publication in 1883, Treasure Island has remained one of the great tales of the sea. The story is told through the eyes of young Jim Hawkins, who first hears the tales of buried pirate treasure while working in his father's tavern. Once he actually meets some of those pirates, the action moves from the tavern, to the the high seas, and then to a secret island. A true adventure classic.

A once-unique story that has spawned hundreds of imitations, it's characters' names have become part of the English language. This novel was a breakthrough in literature for its time, combining horror, science fiction, and psychology, in exploring the dual nature of its hero and anti-hero and by implication, the potential in all of us to experience both good and evil in our personalities.
