Emma Bovary, gelangweilt in ihrer Ehe mit Charles, einem Landarzt, sehnt sich nach der großen Liebe und nach Leidenschaft, scheitert daran und treibt schlussendlich sich und ihren Mann in den Ruin.

Für seine Novelle "Der alte Mann und das Meer" wird Ernest Hemingway 1953 mit dem Pulitzer Preis ausgezeichnet. Nur ein Jahr später erhält der Autor den Literaturnobelpreis. In der Short Story "Die Killer", erschienen 1927, wird Nick Adams, ein wiederkehrender Charakter in Hemingways Texten, Zeuge eines Überfalls auf ein Lokal. Zwei Gangster suchen einen ehemaligen Boxer namens Ole Andreson; die Ermordung scheint unabwendbar. "Das kurze glückliche Leben des Francis Macomber", 1936 publiziert, erzählt von einer Großwildjagd in Kenia.

1601 am Globe Theatre in London uraufgeführt, gehört Shakespeares Drama Hamlet zu den bekanntesten und meistdiskutierten Tragödien der Weltliteratur. Bereits in der Entstehungszeit war das Stück populär und genießt bis heute eine beeindruckende Bühnenpräsenz; Aussprüche wie "Sein oder Nichtsein" haben Eingang gefunden in unsere Alltagssprache. Prinz Hamlet von Dänemark strebt danach, den Tod seines Vaters zu rächen. Um den Mörder zu finden, macht Hamlet eine Wahrheitsprobe in Form einer Inszenierung und führt ein Stück im Theaterstück auf.

Jedes Kind kennt die Märchen der Brüder Grimm, die von Verwandlungen und Glücksfällen, Fröschen, Prinzen oder Wölfen erzählen. Ursprünglich war die Sammlung aber gar nicht für junge Leser*innen gedacht. Hänsel und Gretel, Rotkäppchen und Schneewittchen sind längst zu deutschen Exportschlagern geworden. Doch ebenso großartig und oft noch abgründiger sind die nicht so bekannten Märchen. In Allerleirauh etwa versucht eine Königstochter, den sexuellen Annäherungsversuchen ihres Vaters zu entkommen, indem sie in das Nachbarland flieht und mit Ruß und pelziger Kleidung bedeckt in den Küchen des dortigen Schlosses arbeitet.
