"Tarzan and the Golden Lion" is an adventure novel by American writer Edgar Rice Burroughs, the ninth in his series of twenty-four books about the title character Tarzan. It was first published as a seven part serial in Argosy All-Story Weekly beginning in December 1922; and then as a complete novel by A.C. McClurg & Co. on March 24, 1923.

"Tarzan the Terrible" is a novel by American writer Edgar Rice Burroughs, the eighth in his series of twenty-four books about the title character Tarzan. C. McClurg. Its setting, Pal-ul-don, is one of the more thoroughly realized "lost civilizations" in Burroughs' Tarzan stories. The novel contains a map of the place as well as a glossary of its inhabitants' language.

An adventure tale that has capture the ages! The first book in the legendary Tarzan series tells the story of John Clayton, born in the coastal jungles of Africa to a marooned couple from England, adopted as an infant by apes after they die, then raised in ignorance of his human heritage. Through sheer force of will Tarzan becomes king of the jungle and slowly learns of his origin. This is the exciting novel that began it all.

Tarzan frees a native warrior the apes have caught on being impressed by the man's bravery, angering the rest of the ape tribe. Alienated, he exiles himself to his parents' cabin. Later, frightened by an eclipse in which darkness appears to devour the moon, they summon him back. Tarzan reassures them by shooting arrows at the "devourer", and as the eclipse passes is given credit by the creatures for the rescue.

When Tarzan of the Apes frees a man being tortured by cruel bandits, he is surprised to learn that the stranger comes from no race or country the ape-man knows. He is from the fabled land of Onthar, where lie two ancient cities unknown to the outside world. One is Athne, city of ivory; the other is Cathne, city of gold and evil. There great prides of trained lions are used to hunt down men and wage eternal war. And there Tarzan meets the beautiful queen Nemone, who is determined to have Tarzan as her king...or feed him to the lions!

Discovering bullet cartridges in his deceased father's cabin, Tarzan takes them with him as curios. Subsequently, Teeka is taken by an ape from another tribe, and Tarzan and Taug join forces to trail the kidnapper and rescue her. When they catch up, they are surrounded by the enemy tribe and nearly overwhelmed, until Teeka throws the cartridges at their foes in an apparently futile effort to help. When some of them hit a rock, they explode, frightening the hostile apes and saving her "rescuers".

Evil men have come to the land of Tarzan of the Apes, looting and killing as they move. But other evil lurks in a small valley of the Ghenzi Mountains, where the last remnants of an ugly, perverted people dwell in what they call their faith—an ancient belief that came from Rome nearly 2,000 years before. Now they are wicked and many of them are insane. And now they have captured Lady Barbara Collis and mean to use her as a human sacrifice—unless Tarzan arrives in time!

Bukawai, finding Tarzan unconscious after a storm, takes the ape man captive and stakes him out for his hyenas to devour. Escaping, Tarzan leaves the witch doctor in the same trap, in which Bukawai suffers the very fate he had intended for his enemy.

Teeka and Taug have a baby (balu, in the ape language), which Teeka names Gazan and will not allow Tarzan near. She changes her mind after Tarzan saves the baby from a leopard.

Tarzan is taken captive by the warriors of a village of cannibals which has established a village near the territory of the ape tribe. He is saved from them by Tantor, the elephant.

Bukawai attempts to claim credit for Tibo's return and extort payment from the boy's mother, but is rebuffed. He plots vengeance against the native family and Tarzan, but is thwarted by the ape man. In this story Tarzan's life in the wild is contrasted with scenes from the civilized existence of his cousin in England, living the life he might have had had his parents not been marooned in Africa. The cousin does not shine in the comparison.

Angosa war ein kleines, schmutziges Nest inmitten einer wilden, gefährlichen Umgebung, über 170 Meilen vom Sitz des Gouverneurs und fast 200 Meilen von der Küste entfernt. Elf Monate war es her, dass ein Eingeborener vom Stamme der Nuhuris in der Gegend um Zanaho einen riesigen Diamanten fand. Die englisch-französische Firma Priscott & Company in Lokoja entsandte daraufhin einen Schürftrupp unter Leitung des erfahrenen George McCoy nach Zanaho. Einmal im Monat schickte Priscott eine Trägerkolonne mit Medikamenten, Lohngeldern, Lebensmitteln, Werkzeugen, Perlen und Stoffen von Lokoja aus nach Zanaho, wo inzwischen außer neun Weißen auch hundert Eingeborene arbeiten.
