NBC University Theater initially started in Chicago with a remit to bring adaptations of classic novels, usually Anglo-American, to a radio audience. In its later years, it also included short stories and plays, and went on to win the distinguished Peabody award. University Theater relied on excellent distillations of the novels. and first-class acting alongside high production values.

When Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) published Three Stories and 10 Poems in 1923, he was 24, a wounded veteran of the Great War, and still three years away from publishing his debut novel (The Sun Also Rises). So the "Three Stories" give us a unique look into Hemingway's developing writing skills and his very particular areas of creative interest.

För att överleva tvingas han att ägna sig åt livsfarlig smuggling. Harrys hårda kamp för sin existens och familj ställs mot de rika yachtägarnas lyxliv, som består av ytliga bekymmer och neurotiska utsvävningar. Att ha och inte ha är kanske den mest spännande och samtidigt den mest sociala av Hemingways romaner.

Även om Hemingway är som mest känd för sina romaner, anser många att hans noveller är det bästa med hans författarskap. Novellerna i Snön på Kilimandjaro och andra noveller var inte med i hans första tre novellsamlingar och de kom ut samlade för första gången 1938 som en del av antologin The Fifth Column and First Forty-Nine Stories.
