Was ist denn da passiert? Auf der Koppel der Green Valley Ranch steht plötzlich ein Pferd, das Leonie noch nie gesehen hat - samt Sattel und Zaumzeug. Schnell zeigt sich, dass das Pferd zu einem Reiter gehört, der beim Reiten in der Nähe der Ranch abgeworfen wurde. Beim Aufprall hat der junge Mann sein Gedächtnis verloren. Er weiß weder wer er ist, noch wo er herkommt. Dr. Hamilton schaltet sofort die Polizei ein. Doch dann wird die Situation immer merkwürdiger.

Green Valley ist von einer schlimmen Dürre betroffen. Der Astoria Creek ist völlig ausgetrocknet und es gibt kein Wasser mehr für die Tiere und Pflanzen der Bewohner. Nicht mehr lange und Silvercloud und die anderen Pferde müssen an einen anderen Ort gebracht werden, damit sie weiter versorgt werden können. Dann taucht auch noch der Fremde Duncan Portwater auf, der den Bewohnern des Tals Wasser verkaufen will. Wieso hat er genug davon? Merkwürdig, denkt nicht nur Leonie. Hat er etwas mit dem ausgetrockneten Fluss zu tun, oder haben vielleicht die Mono-Indianer den Fluss umgeleitet?

Das gibt's doch nicht! Leonie und ihre Freundinnen planen gerade einen besonderen Oster-Gottesdienst im Zirkuszelt von Mr. Lewis, als das wertvollste Pferd des Wanderzirkus entführt wird. Als dann auch noch Leonies Hengst Silver Cloud verschwindet, wird klar, dass die Mädchen es mit einem neuen Rätsel zu tun haben.
