2125: Mark Brandis' Schiff, die Hermes, ist mit der nun unbemannten Delta IX im Schlepptau unterwegs zurück zur Erde. Die ermüdende Bordroutine auf dem wochenlangen Flug wird jäh unterbrochen: die Delta IX ist plötzlich spurlos verschwunden.

Ein ungewöhnlich starkes Erdbeben lässt die San-Andreas-Spalte, auf der die Stadt steht, aufbrechen. Der Hangar stürzt ein, und nur Brandis' Geistesgegenwart verhindert, dass die HERMES zusammen mit dem Rest der VEGA-Raumschiffe vor Ort zerstört wird. Die Stadt geht im Erdbeben unter.
