Recently unemployed, John Huxford accepts an offer to work at Sheridan & Moore, Montreal in Quebec. He agrees with his fiancée that he will first travel alone to prepare everything for a few weeks before she can join him. Unfortunately, weeks, months pass and she gets no news from John. Sheridan & Moore even say they never saw him in Montreal. Many years pass, and it seems that he has died somewhere or started a new life.

Mr. Hammond, who is travelling on the American steamer "The Spartan", is suspicious about two passengers after having witnessed their conversation on the deck. They were talking about a secret square box, a mechanism, and the fact that the world will soon hear of it...

For reasons that are unclear, Nicholas Craigie, Captain of the Pole-Star, decides to anchor in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, contrary to the opinion of his crew. Indeed, the boat could be trapped in the ice at any moment, resulting in a sudden death for everyone. One morning Mr. Manson, the second mate, reports he saw a ghost at night. His story is not taken seriously, and is put down to idleness.

One day, an old Black maid offers him a Black oval-shaped stone which belonged to her ancestors. At the end of the war, Jephson gets married and establishes himself as a doctor in Brooklyn. Conan Doyle has been inspired by the real case of the ship Mary Celeste which was found drifting in the Atlantic off Portugal, under full sail but apparently abandoned.

Robert Armitage tells how his friend John Barrington Cowles died in strange circumstances. In the spring of 1879, the two students visited an exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. This is where Cowles met a beautiful lady named Kate Northcott, and they instantly fell in love with each other.

John McVittie, a scientist tired of human beings, decides to retire in an isolated cottage on the shores of Scotland so he can work in his laboratory room quietly. During a strong stormy night, a boat named "Archangel" is shipwrecked near his house. Reluctant at first, he consents to see if he can be of any help. He saves the, apparently, only living survivor from the shipwreck...
