The Deep End

“I thought college would make me brave. I didn’t realize it would just make me honest.”“Only if you want. And if you say stop—at any point—we stop. No questions.”“No shame.”— THE DEEP END: FIRST LAP —Ryder Kane arrives at college with a swim scholarship, a packed dorm room, and a private hunger he’s kept locked down for years. On his very first night, his roommate Theo Rivera walks in at the worst possible moment—then does the one thing Ryder never expected: he treats him like a person, not a punchline. Theo offers safety, consent, and a rule Ryder didn’t know he needed: no shame.

Ryder thought the hardest part would be admitting what he wants. He was wrong. The hardest part is what happens when someone with authority decides Ryder's desire is something he can schedule, test, and control—and Ryder keeps showing up anyway. In Early Bird, Ryder's mornings start before sunrise, pulled into the swim facility by messages that read less like invitations and more like instructions. By day, he has to function like a normal freshman—practice, classes, campus life—while carrying the private consequences of what he's gotten himself into.

Ryder thought he understood the rules. He was wrong. What starts as a private symbol inside Jace’s apartment turns into something heavier in Book 3: The Necklace—a lock, a line, and a quiet promise that Ryder is stepping into something more dangerous than sex. Jace wants obedience. Ryder wants to believe this is still choice. But the deeper he falls into Jace’s orbit, the harder it gets to tell the difference.

The Red Room swallowed sound like it was designed for secrets. “The notebook is punishment. This is management.” Ryder thought Jace’s control ended in the Red Room. He was wrong. Because punishment is one thing. A system is another. Jace pulls Ryder deeper into a world of rules, structure, and consequence. Theo, Destiny, and Drew become reminders that Ryder still has a life outside of him—one Jace may not be willing to share. And by the time Ryder realizes just how far Jace plans to go, he may already be in too deep.
