The Vanguard Calculus

FORTY WARSHIPS ARE COMING. HE FOUND THEM IN A RATION ORDER.A million calories, delivered at midnight, shunted to a dock nobody uses. Food for a fleet, at a station that doesn't have one.Executive Officer Elias Thorne runs the arithmetic twice, by hand, on a paper clipboard, because the Aegis has nothing better. Payload weight. Burn rate. Transit time. The numbers give him seventy-two hours and one conclusion: the compliance audit that dragged them to Torus Prime was never an audit. It was a lure. And they're already sitting inside it.The Aegis is a museum piece. Sixty years obsolete, run on brass valves and grease pencil, crewed by the people the fleet had nowhere else to put. Half her systems are held together with friction tape. She has no AI, no digital backbone, and no chance in a straight fight. Then the Solarian Syndicate arrives. And doesn't fire. They jam the net. They kill the lights. They broadcast a compliance notice and begin filing the paperwork, because nothing gets shot until it has been costed out and the bill is ready for collection. They want the station intact, the cargo on the racks, and the Aegis's analog navigation logs pulled off her deck by hand. They will send men in tungsten armor to collect. So Thorne stops trying to win the fight and starts pricing it. He has an ammonia nebula that blinds every sensor the Syndicate owns. A ship too primitive to register on anything built to hunt digital targets. A gravity grid with an off switch, and boarders whose entire doctrine assumes the floor stays where they left it.Obsolete, it turns out, is a kind of camouflage.Fifty-two souls aboard when the fleet arrived. Thorne is already keeping the count. And when he finally reads the file that put them here, the count won't be the worst number on the page. The Ambush is a full-length, 92,000-word novel and the first book in The Vanguard Calculus: hard military science fiction where the fighting is done with supply manifests, slide rules, and a wrench, and every victory is priced to the decimal. For readers who devour the fleet tactics of Jack Campbell's The Lost Fleet, the chain-of-command grit of David Weber's Honor Harrington, and the survival math of Andy Weir.
