Biblical Memoirs

Men have spoken Tamar’s name as though it were only a wound. This is her answer. Born into the royal house of David, Tamar grows up amid cedar halls, guarded daughters, rival sons, and the dangerous splendor of kingship. She expects the life prepared for women of her station: marriage, household, children, continuance. Instead, one summons, one locked room, and one brother’s violence cut her life away from the road that had seemed secure. But Tamar is more than the story of a single crime.

When I Asked to Die is not the story of Elijah’s whole life. It is the story of his collapse. After fire falls on Mount Carmel, after the prophets of Baal are judged, after rain finally breaks the long drought, Elijah should stand in triumph. Instead, one message from Jezebel sends him fleeing into the wilderness. The prophet who faced kings and called on Yahweh before all Israel now finds himself overtaken by fear, exhaustion, shame, and the bitter knowledge that public victory is not the same thing as peace in the soul.

Bought Back is the unforgettable story of Gomer, the wife of Hosea, told at last in her own voice.Remembered by generations as a warning, Gomer has long stood in the shadow of prophecy—named for betrayal, spoken of as a symbol, and rarely imagined as a woman of flesh and memory. But before she...

Before the wilderness. Before the burning bush. Before Pharaoh and the sea. He was a Hebrew child drawn out of the Nile and raised in the house of the oppressor. Born of Israel, preserved by Egypt, Moses grows up divided between two worlds: the mother-house that first marked him with the name of Yahweh, and the palace that clothes him in privilege, order, and power. He is taught the wisdom of Egypt, yet never fully belongs to it. He is bound by blood to the afflicted, yet cannot return to them without shame.

Great Possessions is a haunting work of biblical historical fiction told in the voice of the man history remembers only as the one who went away sorrowful. He was not born to ease. He built his life by discipline, restraint, and hard-won wisdom, turning a vulnerable household into one of standing, order, and wealth. He kept the law. He gave alms. He earned the respect of elders, servants, and neighbors alike. By every visible measure, he was a righteous man. But beneath the ordered rooms, sealed storehouses, and carefully guarded honor, another master had long been at work: fear.

Before the Water Stirred is a deeply human retelling of the man at the pool of Bethesda—the one remembered for a single day, but shaped by years of loss before it. Once, he was a working man, strong in his father’s trade and sure of the life opening before him. Then injury took his strength, dependence took his pride, and time slowly stripped away his place in his family, his work, and the world he had known. By the time he is carried to the pool near the Sheep Gate, he is no longer only a man in pain, but a man worn thin by waiting, bitterness, shame, and the ache of being left behind.

Before she was remembered as the widow of Zarephath, she was a wife, a mother, and a woman watching her house disappear one handful at a time. The sky has closed over Zarephath. The wells are sinking. The fields are failing. The gods of her people are silent. Inside one poor house, a sick husband weakens beside the wall, a little boy watches too much, and a woman measures flour, oil, water, and breath with trembling hands.
