Penguin Island is Anatole France’s most searching and satirical novel. A humorous critique of customs and laws, rituals and rites, its subject is human nature, but its characters are penguins in the mythical land of Penguinia. The story of the strutting penguins and their virtues and vices is not merely a burlesque allegory of French history, but a satire of the history of mankind.

Mademoiselle Jeanne, drawn by curiosity and the allure of mystery, attends a midnight Mass at the village church, said to be haunted by spirits of the departed. As the night unfolds, the air grows thick with a palpable sense of dread, and the shadows of the past emerge to claim their presence among the living. In the dim candlelight, ghostly figures and ethereal whispers fill the sacred space, weaving an eerie tapestry of fear and fascination. As Jeanne witnesses the ethereal procession, she is confronted with the haunting reality of mortality and the power of faith.

In this series we explore the many facets of love through literary talents that span both time and country. Love is good. It’s positive, a source of joy, nourishment and all over goodness. But sometimes other more malevolent forces come to play. They infect that love, they see their form as better. Instinctively we would shy away but sometimes its pull is too powerful, almost attractive. We are drawn closer into the shadows.

Whilst faith can be practiced anywhere religious faith is usually at a church or temple. The stories in this volume are centered both in houses of worship and with those with a strong association to its calling. Of course, short story authors have a determined belief in their undoubted talents to make us look at this subject from different angles. In this volume they take us on literary journeys that are revealing and challenging yet always entertaining.
