Book Two follows Chris Locke as he enters his second year at the Valdris Academy and begins to understand the true weight of the prophecy tied to him—"the champion of contradictions…bound to an ancient voice."

Chris trains harder than ever, supported by Nara's meticulous guidance and the unwavering loyalty of Maximus and Brutus, the goatmen he accidentally summoned but who have become his shield line and family. Instructor Dray arrives as a new, formidable mentor, secretly tied to the ancient Solven Order and fully aware of the prophecy's implications.

A letter from Aldric Vane draws the group to Calisto, where they discover a centuries old threshold scar beneath the city—a "wound" the Ashen Below is trying to force open. As instability grows, Chris learns he is the anchor: the only one whose strange attribute profile can stand inside the wound and hold it open long enough for Dray to close it.

When the wound erupts prematurely at dawn, the team descends into the Undertow. Chris stands over the widening crack as infernal pressure tries to unwrite him, while Maximus and Brutus battle the creatures spilling through the breach. Dray races to inscribe the closing array. In the climax, Chris endures the full force of the Below—"he stood over an open wound in the fabric of the world and he held it… and he did not move."

The wound seals. Calisto is saved. But the Ashen Below has learned from its failure—and is already recalculating.
