John Bartine is pleasant company and good at cards, but he has one peculiarity his friends have learned not to question: between eleven o’clock and midnight he will not look at the time, and he becomes strange, irritable and afraid.
Pressed by a doctor friend one evening, he explains. The old gold watch he carries belonged to his great-grandfather, a loyalist hanged by a mob during the Revolution at precisely eleven o’clock at night. Ever since Bartine inherited it, something in him rises at that hour. The doctor, amused and a little scientific, proposes an experiment: he will keep the watch for one evening, and show his friend the face of it at the fatal minute.
First published in Tales of Soldiers and Civilians (1891), John Bartine’s Watch is a tight, chilling story of inherited dread and ancestral memory from Ambrose Bierce, the master of American dark fiction.
