Three weeks before the longest night of the year, the sky over Thimble Hollow starts coming apart at the seams.
Marigold Pell is the hedge-witch seamstress of a snowbound mountain-pass town where magic is a craft, and she mends what is torn: coats, quarrels, even weather. Every mend borrows a little of someone's time, and every borrowed minute has to be repaid with a kindness. So when the great patchwork Weather Quilt that keeps the Hollow's winters gentle begins shedding long gray threads, each one tied in a hard knot, she knows what it means. Somebody in town owes a debt, and the debt is being called in.
She has until the solstice festival to find out whose secret is pulling the thread. A stiff, spectacled inspector with wet socks and a clipboard has arrived to decide whether the town's road and post will be closed for good. A retired dragon courier who is terrified of heights sits wedged in her kitchen doorway. Her young apprentice mends things so well they can never be undone. A cat who keeps accounts will not let anyone leave owing. And the neighbors who could help are two old sweethearts who have not spoken in thirty years.
There is no dark lord and no war here. Just a mystery with a gentle heart, a town full of stubborn, funny, lovable people, a bakehouse that smells of cinnamon, a hundred small kindnesses that add up to something enormous, and a solstice night that pays off every thread.
Perfect for listeners who want a long, warm, low-stress winter story about found family, second chances and the courage to let others help.
A cozy fantasy of found family and comfort.
