Dead Men's Money is a thirty-seven-chapter detective novel by the British crime writer J. S. Fletcher, told in the first person by Hugh Moneylaws, a young Berwick-upon-Tweed man who keeps house with his widowed mother and works as a clerk to Mr Lindsey, the solicitor. One spring evening a one-eyed stranger — James Gilverthwaite, a retired ship-master who says he is back in the town after fifty years — takes lodgings in their quiet house, his pockets full of gold; and from that hour Hugh is drawn, before he knows it, into villainy and murder. Sent out at night on the stranger's errand, he finds a murdered man lying by the roadside where the Till pours into the Tweed — the dead man of the title, John Phillips — and the discovery sets off an investigation that runs through the inquest, the parish registers, the marine-store dealer Abel Crone, the signatures to a will, the salmon gaff and the ice ax, under the eye of the local police and of Mr Lindsey himself. The trail leads up to Sir Gilbert Carstairs of Hathercleugh, to the young businessman Gavin Smeaton, to Mrs. Ralston of Craig and the Hathercleugh butler, and to a fortune in dead men's money that men are ready to kill for; Hugh, who reads his own obituary before the mystery is done and is left to drown by a man who has come back to claim a title and estates after thirty years, must see the affair through to its end among the swag, the gold and the dark pool. Fletcher, one of the most prolific crime novelists of the Edwardian and Georgian era, builds the book on sea-coast scenery, lodgings and legacies, wills and false identities — the machinery of the golden-age detective story.
