Acerca de este título
The Rayner-Slade Amalgamation (1922) is a thirty-five-chapter classic detective novel by the British crime writer J. S. Fletcher. When James Allerdyke — a Bradford business man travelling home from Christiania in charge of a fortune in jewels belonging to the Russian Princess Nastirsevitch — dies mysteriously in Hull in the middle of the night, his cousin Marshall Allerdyke, a Yorkshire wool merchant, comes south to unravel the affair. The trail runs through the London hotel world of Franklin Fullaway, the private business man, and his secretary Miss Slade; through the world-famed soprano Mademoiselle Zélie de Longarde — in private life Miss Celia Lennard — whose "Pinkie Pell" pearls vanish together with the princess's gems; and through a gallery of rogues: the American adventurer Van Koon, the Whitechapel apothecary Schmall, and the shady dealers behind a forged cheque for sixty thousand pounds. Scotland Yard's chief and the detective Chettle piece the "amalgamation" together — the union, as one of the schemers reveals, of the Rayner and Slade interests — until the pearls are restored, the plotters are unmasked, and Marshall Allerdyke, taking his own way, wins the singer's hand. Fletcher, one of the most prolific crime novelists of the Edwardian and Georgian era, builds the book on trains, hotels, jewels, forged documents and identity — the machinery of the golden-age detective story.
