The day after Christmas, Dr. Watson visits 221B Baker Street and finds Sherlock Holmes examining a shabby discarded hat. Ryder hid the gem inside a goose to avoid detection, only to grab the wrong bird and lose track of the stone.
Faced with the trembling thief, Holmes makes a surprising choice. Rather than handing him over to police, he lets Ryder go free, hoping terror will redeem him and clear the falsely accused Horner. Lighthearted, witty, and steeped in Christmas atmosphere, this tale showcases Holmes’ legendary powers of observation as well as his flexible sense of justice.
