A frozen Arctic expanse, a captain who appears to be hardly of sound mind and a strange wailing from across the ice fields make for an eerie and desolate voyage. John M’Allister-Ray, a student of medicine aboard the Polestar, records the events in his diary whilst scarcely believing what he is witnessing.

It is the autumn of 1910, and for 15 long years, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson have battled R’lluhloig, the Hidden Mind that was once Professor James Moriarty. Europe is creeping inexorably towards war, and a more cosmic conflict is nearing its zenith, as in a single night all the most eminent members of the Diogenes Club die horribly, seemingly by their own hands. Holmes suspects it is the handiwork of a German spy working for R’lluhloig, but his search for vengeance costs an old friend his life.

Holmes is just days away from bringing down the biggest criminal ringleader in London. But his quick and wicked foe is as cautious and intelligent as he. When Moriarty learns of Holmes' plans against him, he releases an evil on England the likes of which no civilized man had ever seen. In a desperate attempt to save England and, perhaps, the known world, Holmes and his trusty friend Watson travel across Europe to find the source of Moriarty's newfound power and end him and his wicked plan for good.
