Matsutake is the most valuable mushroom in the world - and a weed that grows in human-disturbed forests across the northern hemisphere. Through its ability to nurture trees, matsutake helps forests to grow in daunting places. It is also an edible delicacy in Japan, where it sometimes commands astronomical prices. In all its contradictions, matsutake offers insights into areas far beyond just mushrooms and addresses a crucial question: what manages to live in the ruins we have made?

It has been over two years since the System arrived on Earth, leaving survivors fighting to rebuild and save humanity. Thanks to the help of a creature thought to be a legend, Jason and his friends have a path to discovering the truth behind what has happened. The System has been stacked against them, but these quests give them a chance to level the playing field against those off-worlders trying to exploit Earth and its people. It has been six months since the System changed the lives of Jason and his friends. They made new allies, built a home in a new world, and rescued friends and family. Now, they are heading out into the new world to see what has survived. Will they find more of humanity in the wilderness, and will they find people they can trust? They have learned more about this new world, but they will discover there is much they still do not know.

Jason and his friends just wanted to spend a week at the lake house. Time to relax, hang out, and catch up on old times. Then the System arrived. It only took a few hours for their world to become a real-life roleplaying game; trading some downtime for the need to learn new skills and powers while trying to defend their new home, their families, and survive. They don’t know the rules. They don’t know what’s coming next. What they do know is; they need to reinforce and expand their fort while protecting it, keep leveling up, and explore a dangerous new world.

Over the last year, the System has continued to remake the world. Jason and his friends have discovered more details about a threat to all of humanity and have a quest to stop it. They continually need to get stronger and do their part to protect their chunk of the world. While searching for clues, they will revisit allies and make new ones. They will face some hard choices as they encounter people out for themselves, but there will be new friends they can help along the way.

It has been a year and a half of living with the System. Jason and his friends are not just surviving, but are preparing for the future. Thanks to a new quest, they are establishing a kingdom in the former southwest portion of the United States. They are trying to protect humanity wherever possible and build a kingdom to defend their part of the world.
