Alors qu'il n'a que trois ans, son père est interné dans un hôpital psychiatrique où il décédera des suites de la syphilis, maladie dont sa mère est également atteinte. A 13 ans, Howard rédige une première nouvelle fantastique. Un bref séjour à New York lui donne l'occasion, à travers le cercle d'amateurs de fantastique qu'il fréquente, de publier un premier récit.
