Nur dem reichen Wiesenbauer macht die Trockenzeit nichts aus, sein Wiesenland ist ein Sumpfgebiet.

Der ehrgeizige, tatkräftige Deichgraf baut einen neuen Deich, der vor Sturmfluten schützen und neues Land gewinnen soll. Als in einer stürmischen Nacht genau dieser Deich bricht, muss der Deichgraf hilflos mit ansehen, wie seine geliebte Frau und sein Kind in den Fluten untergehen. Da stürzt auch er sich samt seinem Schimmel ins tosende Wasser und lebt als gespenstischer Schimmelreiter im volkstümlichen Aberglauben weiter.
