"The Parasite" was first published in 1953 in The Avon SF & F Reader. Sir Arthur C. Clarke (1917-2008) is regarded as one of the most-influential science fiction writers of all time. He was named a Grand Master by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, and was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame.

The Parasite is an 1894 novelette by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The Parasite makes use of a form of mind control similar to the mesmerism of the Victorian era; it works on some hosts but not others. The main character is a young man known as Austin Gilroy. He studies physiology and knows a professor who is studying the occult. The young man is introduced to a middle-aged woman known as Miss Penclosa, who has a crippled leg and psychic powers. She is a friend of the Professor's wife.

Es erscheint demgegenüber reizvoll, Schiller auch als Übersetzer zu würdigen. Der Begriff der Übersetzung ist hier freilich im weitesten Sinne zu verstehen, denn Schiller hat mit theatersicherem Handgriff die französischen Alexandriner, ein im Deutschen sehr sprödes Versmaß, in Prosa umgesetzt.
