While playing outside on the farm in Kansas, Dorothy, and Toto happen upon the Shaggy Man, who asks for directions to Butterfield. Further down the road, they encounter Polychrome, who is the daughter of the Rainbow.

The Road to Oz takes Dorothy on an adventure in Oz to a grand party in honor of Ozma's birthday. It starts near her home on Uncle Henry's farm in Kansas when she helps a shaggy stranger find the road he is seeking. On the way they find a young boy, Button-Bright, and together they get lost, only to find themselves in the fairylands of Oz.

Frank Baum's Land of Oz books. It was originally published on July 10, 1909 and documents Dorothy's fourth visit to Oz.
