This updated and expanded edition of A Short History of Film provides an accessible overview of the major movements, directors, studios, and genres from the 1880s to the present. Succinct yet comprehensive, this edition provides new information on contemporary horror, comic book, and franchise films; issues surrounding women and minority filmmakers; the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on movies worldwide; the shift from film to digital production; the rising use of artificial intelligence in cinema; and the impact of streaming on the industry.

This little book is packed with information on how to create compelling, complex 3-dimensional characters. Creating compelling movie characters is a big deal. Glossing over the intricacies of character is putting the screenwriter and ultimately, the feature film at a serious disadvantage. Movie-goers want to root for a character. They want to see conflicts between characters and they want to see how these conflicts are resolved.

Over the last two hundred years, Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel, Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus has formed the basis of many motion pictures, theatrical productions, and television shows. The familiar tale of a scientist who attempts to create life from the body parts of the dead has been told as traditional drama, comedy and satire, Shakespearean tragedy, and absurdist melodrama. It has also inspired the work of other writers to create their own unique tales, like Maurice Renard’s The Hands of Orlac, Curt Siodmak’s Donovan’s Brain, Hanns Heinz Ewers’ Alraune, and many others.
