A torto ritenuto un'epoca immobile, il Medioevo è fatto anche di viaggi. Per ragioni politiche e per lavoro, per pregare o per studiare: viaggiano re e mercanti, pellegrini e fuorilegge, chierici e giullari, emarginati e cavalieri erranti. E si naviga nei fiumi, nei laghi, nei canali, nei mari e nell'oceano. Ma che cosa significava mettersi per strada lasciando la propria casa alle spalle, come si viaggiava in concreto, quali erano le conoscenze e le fantasie geografiche, quali i paesi conosciuti, quale il rapporto con le genti straniere?

In 1494, there were five sovereign regional powers in Italy: Milan, Venice, Florence, the Papal States, and Naples. In 1536, only one remained: Venice. Despite the pope’s aversion to temporal glory, his authority tended to fill the vacuum in the West left when the last Western Roman emperor, Romulus Augustus, was deposed in 476. The pope would continue to do so until 800, when Charlemagne would allow himself to be crowned Emperor of the West in Rome upon receiving his crown from Pope Leo III. This created modern Europe and was the culmination of two centuries of papal policy aimed at securing its independence from the Byzantine Empire in Constantinople.
