Even for the African continent that is blessed with numerous beautiful natural landscapes, the Okavango Delta is truly unique. Covering a total area of more than fifteen thousand square kilometres the Okawango River is the largest inland delta in the world. It flows from the Bihé Highlands in Angola and travels down to the less elevated regions of the Kalahari Desert until it finally divides into a variety of creeks. It also has the reputation of being one of the major wildlife sanctuaries for a wide variety of Africa's animal species, such as antelope, zebra, springbok, giraffe, lions, gnu, hyenas, gembok, elands and kudus. Apart from the desert-like area of the Etosha Salt Pan, the park consists of Mopani Woodland and Savannah Grassland and also a large number of acacia trees.

The Kalahari is a unique habitat with a great variety of flora and fauna. This comparatively small semi-desert is the last retreat for the legendary Bushmen who are determined to preserve their ancient culture for future generations. Frederick Courteney Selous (1851-1917) was a British explorer, hunter, and conservationist. In this work, The Lion in South Africa, he describes his numerous encounters with wild lions and notes that as far back as the 1890s, lion numbers were shrinking from overhunting.

Mungo Park was an explorer of the real kind. In 1795, only aged 24, he left Gambia for the uncharted interior of Africa, in a journey that would be filled with tragedy, heroism, and adventure. Park was the first European to ever reach the river Niger and the legendary city of Timbuctoo, thus resolving, once and for all, a century-old geographic debate. He travelled with local guides and later entirely alone, through warring kingdoms, robberies, imprisonment, and extreme duress. By the time he returned to Gambia, he had long been given up for dead.

David Livingstone was a Scottish missionary and one of the greatest European explorers who ever lived. He fought all his life against slavery, and is remembered as a national hero for opening up the interior of the so-called "Dark Continent"; his expeditions had a tremendous influence on the colonization of Africa and the relation between Europeans and Africans. The son of a Christian missionary himself, Livingstone felt a spiritual calling to reach people in the interior of Africa in order to find new commercial routes and thus free the Africans from the plague of slavery.
