Paradiso is the third and final part of The Divine Comedy, Dante's epic poem describing man's progress from hell to salvation. In it, the author progresses through nine concentric spheres of heaven. Corresponding with medieval astronomy, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn deal with the four cardinal virtues Prudence, Fortitude, Justice, and Temperance. The remaining two spheres are the fixed stars and the Primum Mobile, containing the purely virtuous and the angels, followed by the Empyrean, or God itself.

In the second book of Dante’s epic poem The Divine Comedy, Dante has left hell and begins the ascent of the mount of purgatory. Just as hell had its circles, purgatory, situated at the threshold of heaven, has its terraces, each representing one of the seven mortal sins. With Virgil again as his guide, Dante climbs the mountain; the poet shows us, on its slopes, those whose lives were variously governed by pride, envy, wrath, sloth, avarice, gluttony, and lust.

The Divine Comedy is a narrative poem by Dante Alighieri that describes the the pilgrim Dante’s travels through Hell (Inferno), Purgatory (Purgatorio), and Paradise (Paradiso). This trio of books, or cantiche, is one example of the number three as a theme throughout the work. Each book consists of 33 cantos, which—added to an introductory canto—totals 100. Each cantica follows a pattern of nine phases plus one for a total of ten: nine circles of hell plus Lucifer, nine rings of Mount Purgatory plus the garden of Eden, nine celestial bodies of Paradise followed by the Empyrean essence of God.

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood began as a group of painters, including Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt, who wished to reject the stern and academic strictures of current painting and return to the simpler and more uncomplicated days before the Italian High Renaissance and the days of Raphael. The movement was short lived but very influential and, as well, was taken up by a number of different arts.

It is often said that two things are unavoidable: death and taxes. Certainly the latter is a common thorn in adult life, but as to the former it seems that for many people it is merely a hiccup in life’s journey. A journey they wish, if being of good deed and character, to share at the eternity of heaven’s largesse, a reward for faith and the obligations of religion. Of course for those not so fortunate an altogether different experience was prepared for them: hell. Its nightmare visions are so terrifying, conjured up by Dante, Milton, Blake, Baudelaire and many others.

Dante's Divine Comedy is considered to be not only the most important epic poem in Italian literature, but also one of the greatest poems ever written. It consists of 100 cantos, and (after an introductory canto) they are divided into three sections. Each section is 33 cantos in length, and they describe how Dante and a guide travel through Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso.

“Probably the most finely accomplished and ... most enduring" translation (Los Angeles Times Book Review) of this essential work of world literature—from a renowned scholar and master teacher of Dante and an accomplished poet. “The Hollanders … act as latter-day Virgils, guiding us...

The Book of Jubilees stands as one of the most enigmatic, influential, and fiercely debated texts of the ancient world. For centuries, this profound work remained hidden from the mainstream Western Biblical canon, preserved primarily by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and whispered about in the margins of theological history. However, the mid-twentieth-century discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran shattered centuries of obscurity.

The human imagination has always sought a singular origin for its most complex institutions. Across millennia, historians, theologians, and mythmakers have looked back at the cradles of civilization, seeking the architects of human civilization, organized religion, and imperial power. In the vast tapestry of Near Eastern antiquity, two figures tower over all others as the ultimate symbols of human ambition and spiritual rebellion: Nimrod, the mighty hunter of Genesis, and Semiramis, the legendary warrior-queen of Assyria.

In the second century BCE, the rolling hills of Judea became the crucible for one of the most asymmetric and consequential conflicts in ancient history. The story of Judas Maccabeus is not merely a chronicle of military brilliance or a provincial revolt against a distant empire. It is the narrative of a defining moment when a civilization’s faith, identity, and future hung precariously in the balance.

The architectural design of Biblical literature relies on a profound, highly sophisticated structural network of historical repetitions, poetic echoes, and covenantal developments. While certain key figures such as Abraham, Moses, and David receive vast quantities of textual real estate, commanding entire books and meticulous genealogical frameworks, there are specific instances where the Holy Spirit embeds an extraordinarily dense theological truth into an absolute minimum of narrative space.

The Book of Jasher stands as one of the most captivating, enigmatic, and influential texts outside the traditional Biblical canon. Mentioned explicitly in the books of Joshua and Second Samuel, this ancient chronicle has long intrigued theologians, historians, and seekers of spiritual depth. It serves as a majestic, sweeping companion piece to the Torah, offering an expanded lens through which to view the foundational stories of the Western world.

The voices of the Major Prophets echo across millennia; challenging the foundational structures of human society and calling God’s people back to a state of covenant fidelity. To the modern reader, opening the books of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, and Daniel can feel like stepping into a foreign landscape filled with enigmatic visions, fierce declarations of judgment, and deeply complex historical realities. However, beneath the dense layers of ancient Near Eastern imagery lies a vibrant, beating heart of divine revelation that is intensely relevant to our contemporary world.

Malik Coleman decided to take matters into his own hands and fight the system he had sworn to uphold by kidnapping his own children. After a wild dash for freedom, the frustrated and unsuspecting father is assisted by members of Hekalu, an underground organization designed to aid fathers in stealing their children and led by the beautiful yet deadly Akila Nantambu. Join Coleman as he fights to prove he is a good father and pursues a once loving father turned maniacal, vengeful killer who seeks to topple the justice system, which he blames for the death of his daughter.

To step into the Book of Jeremiah is to enter a world on the brink of total collapse. For forty agonizing years, between 627 BC and the catastrophic fall of Jerusalem in 586 BC, one man stood as a solitary pillar of divine truth against a crashing tide of political delusion, moral decay, and religious hypocrisy. Jeremiah did not choose this path; he was drafted into it before his birth. He was not a detached academic delivering cold lectures, but a weeping participant whose soul fractured alongside his country.

The Book of Ezekiel stands as one of the most visually arresting, structurally complex, and psychologically demanding texts in the entire Biblical canon. For many modern readers, entering its pages feels akin to stepping into a surrealist landscape populated by whirring wheels, multi-faced creatures, consuming fire, and cryptic architectural blueprints. Historically, this complexity has caused many students of Scripture to bypass Ezekiel in favor of more accessible prophetic books.

The Book of Lamentations is the most systematically structured cry of agony in human history. Written in the immediate wake of the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC, its verses present a raw, unfiltered look at a nation’s collapse. For centuries, modern readers have struggled to engage with this text. Its graphic descriptions of famine, divine wrath, and psychological trauma feel distant, while its dense Hebrew poetic structures often get lost in English translations.

The Book of Isaiah is often referred to as "The Fifth Gospel," a title earned through its staggering prophetic clarity and its panoramic view of the redemptive arc of history. Spanning sixty-six chapters, it is a literary cathedral, built over decades of turbulent Judean history, yet speaking with a voice that feels unnervingly contemporary.

Did you know that the apostle Simeon was nicknamed Niger… pronounced NEE-GER in Latin? Growing up, I was taught that it was pronounced ny-jer, so I never gave it any additional thought. A couple of years ago, a friend of mine brought up the reference in Acts, which motivated me to give it a second look. Let’s start by looking at the verse:
