The Island of Doctor Moreau is a science fiction novel by H. G. Wells, first published in 1896. It recounts the adventures of shipwrecked Edward Prendick, who is rescued only to be set adrift near the volcanic, tropical island of Doctor Moreau, an obsessive vivisectionist who 'artistically' carves human beings from animals.

The Man Who Could Work Miracles is a story about Fotheringay, a very unexceptional man who discovers he has an exceptional talent. He can work miracles. He discovers this ability by accident during an argument in a public house - and narrowly avoids setting light to the pub. Some of his other experiments also go awry, and Fotheringay decides to consult the local minister. The latter immediately recognises the potential of this gift and eggs Fotheringay on to greater miracles - with ever greater consequences.

Able to write comfortably in a number of genres, HG Wells was especially applauded for his science fiction works such as The Time Machine and War of the Worlds, but his forays into the social conditions of the times, with classics such as Kipps, were almost as commercially successful. His short stories are miniature masterpieces, many of which bring new and incredible ideas of science fiction to the edge of present-day science fact. Wells also received four nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

As a child, Artie Kipps is left in the care of his aunt and uncle, who have a toy shop in New Romney, Kent. His friends are Sid Pornick and his sister Ann, with whom he falls childishly in love. At the age of 14 Artie is apprenticed to Mr Shalford at the Folkestone Drapery Bazaar, and he loses touch with the Pornicks. Life as an apprentice is grim, and he joins an evening class to improve himself. It is run by Helen Washingham, who is beautiful, artistic and socially smart, and Kipps is bedazzled by her.

Herbert George Wells was born on September 21st, 1866 in Bromley in Kent. He was the youngest of four siblings and his family affectionately knew him as ‘Bertie’. The first few years of his childhood were spent fairly quietly, and Wells didn’t display much literary interest until, in 1874, he accidentally broke his leg and was left to recover in bed, largely entertained by the library of books his father regularly brought him. Through these Wells found he could escape the boredom and misery of his bed and convalescence by exploring the new worlds he encountered in these books.

Considered one of the greatest filmmakers of the twentieth century, legendary director, producer, and screenwriter Orson Welles was also an acclaimed actor, whose distinctive voice commanded attention. In this recording, Welles offers historic interpretations of excerpts from classic literature. This collection features time-honored works by several distinguished contributors, including American authors Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe, as well as Joseph Conrad, Rudyard Kipling, Saki, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Oscar Wilde.

HG Wells was an incredibly prolific writer who contributed short stories in a variety of genres, including science fiction, dystopian fiction, and gothic horror. Originally published in 1897, Thirty Strange Stories contains tales like "The Triumphs of a Taxidermist", "Pollock and the Porroh Man", "The Story of the Late Mr. Elvesham", and "The Stolen Bacillus". "The Red Room" is the horrifying story of a man trapped in a haunted room, but it is never made clear what it is that haunts the room.

HG Wells (1866-1946) was a prolific writer who mastered many sub-genres of the horror, science fiction, and monster tale. The Plattner Story and Others is a collection of 17 short stories, mostly published in periodicals during the 1980s. They include chestnuts like "The Argonauts of the Air", "In the Abyss", "The Apple", "Under the Knife", "The Sea Raiders", "The Cone", and "The Purple Pileus".

In his fiction, HG Wells explored various fantasy and science fiction sub-genres, from alien invasion narratives through time travel to dystopian tales. He was also an innovator and pioneer in matters of plot and style, as proven by the 33 short stories in The Country of the Blind and Other Stories. The tale of the title is about a mountaineer who discovers a secluded valley of blind people. When he tries to tell them about the sense of sight, they scoff and attribute it to an over-active imagination.
