Dorothy and Toto set out to help the Shaggy Man (who really is quite shaggy) and end up lost, following a strange road. The Scarecrow of Oz is the ninth book set in the Land of Oz written by L. Frank Baum. Published on July 16, 1915, it was Baum's personal favorite of the Oz books and tells of Cap'n Bill and Trot journeying to Oz and, with the help of the Scarecrow, overthrowing the cruel King Krewl of Jinxland.

"Dorothy und der Zauberer in Oz" ist ein Kinderbuch des US-amerikanischen Schriftstellers Lyman Frank Baum. Die Erzählung erschien 1908 unter dem Originaltitel "Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz" mit Illustrationen von John R. Neill. Dabei handelt es sich um den vierten Band des Oz-Zyklus, der in den USA zu den beliebtesten Kinderbüchern gehört und zum Teil auch in deutscher Sprache verlegt wurde. Dorothy kommt mit dem Zug und ihrer Katze Eureka nach Hugson in Kalifornien, wo sie Onkel Bill Hugson besuchen will, bei dem sich gerade Onkel Henry aufhält.

L. Frank Baums "Dot and Tot of Merryland" erschien 1901, ein Jahr nach "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", und Baum und sein Illustrator W. W. Denslow erhofften sich von dem neuen Buch einen ähnlichen Erfolg. Der blieb aber zu ihrer Enttäuschung aus; das Buch geriet neben den "Oz"-Geschichten nahezu in Vergessenheit. 1994 hat es der New Yorker Verlag The Emerald City Press in seiner Reihe "Books of Wonder" neu aufgelegt (mit Bildern von Donald Abbott).

Folklore, Legenden, Mythen und Märchen sind der Kindheit durch die Zeiten gefolgt, denn jedes normale Kind hat eine gesunde und instinktive Liebe zu phantastischen, erstaunlichen und offenkundig unwirklichen Geschichten. Als der nächste Sturm aufzieht schnappt sich Dorothe ihren geliebten Hund Bodo und rennt so schnell sie kann in den Keller. Doch als sie die Türe wieder öffnet steht Dorothe in einem herrlichen Blumengarten und erfährt, dass sie und Bodo im Lande Oz stehen, das von der bösen Osthexe beherrscht wird.

Das Abenteuer in Oz geht weiter! Als Dorothy und ihre Katze, Eureka, ihren Onkel in Kalifornien besuchen, werden Dorothy und ihr Cousin, Zeb, auf ihrer Kutschfahrt von einem Erdbeben überrascht und stürzen in einen Abgrund. Als sie endlich unten ankommen, finden sie sich in einer Glasstadt wieder. Dort angekommen, werden sie direkt vor Gericht gebracht, weil man ihnen die Schuld an den herab prasselnden Steinen gibt. Als ein Neuankömmling angekündigt wird, ist Dorothy überrascht, den Zauberer von Oz zu sehen!

Lyman Frank Baum was an American children's book writer best-known for creating the popular Wizard of Oz series. Baum was a prolific writer who wrote 14 novels in the Oz series, plus 41 other novels, 83 short stories, over 200 poems, and about 42 scripts. He often wrote under pseudonyms. Of all the books, the one that made Baum a household name was The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
