L'autore, Kenneth Grahame (1859-1932) lo scrisse per il figlio che soffriva di gravi problemi di salute e che morì poi suicida a venti anni. Nel 1909 Grahame si licenziò poi dalla carica di segretario della Banca d'Ighilterra.
